West Coast Pump Weekend
|
Welcome fellow pump players. WCPW '12 is approaching quickly. Previous West Coast Pump Weekends have been met with much enthusiasm and we are anticipating the same for this year. WCPW has been growing slowly but steadily. Pump paintball players by nature seem to be great sports and the camaraderie seen at WCPW proves that. I have always envisioned WCPW to be an intimate, fun filled event, which has I believe been true so far. I hope everyone that has attended a former WCPW agrees. I think most do.
The gaining popularity of the event has brought together more and more pump players sharing similar outlooks on paintball. We hope that continues, but the growing popularity also changes the dynamics of the event. We never want to see the event get so large that it loses its intimacy. I don't dislike large events, it's just not what we envision for WCPW. The first day, fun speedball portion of the event is the most affected with growing popularity.
Because TNT Paintball is basically a recreational facility and we have limited space to set up a speedball field (and we only have room for one), this limits us on how big we can let the event get. In 2010, we had a fair increase in team numbers. This created a situation where we ran late on Saturday getting all the games in, despite great efforts by the folks running the games. Therefore in 2011, we cut the number of games each team played and we finished slightly ahead of schedule but I, and others, felt that there weren't enough games played by each team though.
Therefore we are going to make some changes this year, so that we can both accommodate the increase in players wanting to take part, but also make sure everyone gets to play a decent amount of games. The way we are going to accomplish this is by changing to a 4-man rather than a 3-man format. We can make the field a little larger than we had it last year to accommodate the extra players on the field. We are also going to cap the number of teams at 18 in total. This will enable up to 72 players to take part in the 4-man fun speedball event on Saturday.
So those of you who are making up your own teams, you will need 4 players this year rather than 3. We will still be making up last minute throw together teams for those wanting to take part, but not wanting or able to make up your own 4-man team. I don't anticipate that we will reach our 72 player limit this year, but I cannot guarantee that either, therefore all pre-registered teams will have guaranteed spots but last minute throw together teams will be based on a first come, first served basis, should we reach the limit. So this year, it will be more important than ever to pre-register.
Those wanting to play on Saturday but not wanting to play in the 4-man fun speedball event will be welcome to play in our regular open recreational play group. This will not be pump only though, but as most of you know, we try to get everyone at TNT Paintball to shoot lower than average volumes of paintballs, so none of our games are ever spray and pray fests.
Saturday will conclude with a BBQ dinner and informal socializing. This will be held at the campground, where some opt to camp for the weekend. The BBQ is open to everyone playing during the weekend, whether camping or not. The campground location is 1025 Matheson Lake Park Road. This is the same site as in 2009, 2010, and 2011. More information can be found on the Camping page. Consumption of alcoholic beverages will be allowed only after all paintball playing has ended, at the campsite only, and only by those of legal age (minimum 19 years old in British Columbia). No exceptions.
Sunday, for the recreational play portion of the event, we will not be imposing any limits, although should we get much more than 70 players, we will definitely be splitting up into 2 separate games. Again, I don't anticipate this happening this year yet, but if it does, that's what will happen. Please remember that WCPW is all about fun. We have a lot of high skilled pump players that take part at WCPW, but if you are planning to take things extremely seriously, stay home. The rest of us just want to have fun.
Lunch will be served to all players on both Saturday and Sunday and will consist of TNT's legendary all beef jumbo barbecued dogs and pop. You are on your own for breakfast.
The location for WCPW is TNT Paintball, just outside of Victoria, British Columbia. TNT Paintball is set in the middle of a typical West Coast rain forest, but some of the playing fields are in a clearing, so there is a good variety of terrain. TNT Paintball is operated by owners Reiner and Lorne who are avid pump players. As well, many of TNT Paintball's staff also play pump on a regular basis. TNT Paintball is chosen by more paintball players on Vancouver Island than any other facility. For more information and pictures of the field check here.
